Which Mexican musicians will become the next hit in the English-speaking world? Possibly the band Maná ("Manna"), the most popular rock band in Latin America.

The Baltimore Sun says that Maná is in the forefront of the Latin rock movement in the United States. The Sun describes its music as a cross of Live and Bon Jovi with the influence of Santana.

The year the band won a Grammy for the best Latin rock/alternative recording. Its new album is MTV Unplugged. The corresponding DVD is the first DVD made by a Mexican rock band.

According to the band's official biography, the band had its origins during the 1970s in Guadalajara and the underground bars of Mexico City. It was called Green Hat and sang in English.

Later, the band changed its name and songs to Spanish. It recorded its first album, Sombrero Verde ("Green Hat") in 1981. It recorded its second album, A Ritmo de Rock ("To the Rhythm of Rock") in 1983.

The band changed its name to Maná in 1985. It recorded other albums:: Falta Amor ("Lacking Love," 1989), ¿Dónde Jugarán los Niños? ("Where Will the Children Play?," 1992), Maná en Vivo ("Maná Live," 1994), Cuando los Ángeles Lloran ("When the Angels Cry," 1995). Cuando los Ángeles Lloran was very popular. More than 500,000 discs were sold in the United States, and it won a Grammy. It won similar awards in 18 countries.

Later, the group recorded more albums: Sueños Líquidos ("Liquid Dreams," 1997) , which won more awards, and MTV Unplugged (1999). Currently (September 1999) the band is on tour in the United States.
