To some people, it looks like Ricky Martin is an overnight success. After all, he was almost unknown a few months ago, but now his picture or name is everywhere: in the Billboard list of popular songs, on the cover of Time magazine, on numerous television shows, in newspaper articles.
In fact, the Puerto Rican singer has been famous for years — in the
Spanish-speaking world. He began his musical career with the famous group
Menudo.
He has recorded four Spanish-language CDs. He played the role of Miguel
Morez in an American soap opera (General Hospital, 1994-96). He
acted in Les Misèrables, the Broadway musical. His song La
Copa de la Vida was the theme song of the World Cup (the soccer championships)
in 1998.
He has sold millions of CDs: Ricky Martin (1991), Me Amarás (1993), A Medio Vivir (5), and Vuelve (1998). His current CD, this one in English, also is called Ricky Martin (1999). One song from the disc, Livin' la Vida Loca, has been number one in the United States. The CD also includes a duet with Madonna.
