If you've ever gone shopping in Latin America or Spain, chances are you've seen signs that say such things as zapatería and heladería. See enough of those signs, and pretty soon it becomes clear that the suffix -ería often refers to a type of store. Our lesson on the -ería word ending lists many of the common ones.

My daughter and I have often wondered, while passing or while enjoying one of the panaderias that we are lucky enough to have near us, why the word is “panADeria” when it could just be “paneria.” Any thoughts?

My guess (and that’s all it is) is that it comes from panadero, the word for “baker,” rather than the word for bread.
