Spanish the No. 4 language on the Internet

Monday October 2, 2006
Spanish is the No. 4 language of the World Wide Web, a new study says.

The study, La difusión del español en internet, published by the Caja Burgos Foundation, said the first language of the Internet in terms of number of users is English, which is no surprise, followed by Chinese and Japanese. According to an article by the EFE news agency published in the Spanish Web portal Terra, there are 80 million Spanish-speaking Internet users, putting Spanish in fourth place ahead of any Indo-European language other than English.

If you were to guess that the No. 1 country those internautas are coming from is Spain or Mexico, you'd be guessing incorrectly. Nearly a third, or 26 million, of the Spanish-speaking Internet users come from the United States, followed by Mexico with 17 million and Spain with 14 million.

One interesting finding of the study is that Spanish speakers don't have nearly the content available that users of some other languages have. Specifically, according to the study, there are 1.47 Web pages available per English-speaking user, and nearly that many for each French and German speaker. But there are only 0.58 Web pages published for each Spanish-speaking Web user. Read the original article (in Spanish)...

I am a learner of Sapnish. There is a site called XLingo where you can exchange ideas in Spanish. I’m afraid to use this as I am still a learner!
