Much research has been done in recent years on learning styles, and researchers have found that people learn in three general ways:
  • Visual learners benefit most from looking at what they're studying.
  • Auditory learners benefit most from listening.
  • Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing, by literally taking a hands-on approach where possible.
That's why what works for one person may not work for another. Differences in learning styles can be especially obvious in language studies — which is why flashcards work well for some people as a vocabulary-building tool, for example, but audiotapes are effective for others.
