Snowboarding in Spanish

Thursday February 12, 2004
Here's part of an email I received today from a Spanish teacher: "This question comes up every year when we study sports, and I haven't run across the Spanish for it yet! How do you express 'to snowboard'?"

It's a good question, and the dictionaries aren't of much help, since even the larger ones don't list the noun form, much less the verb. (The most common Spanish noun used for "snowboard" is — you guessed it — snowboard. Terms used less commonly are plancha de nieve, tabla para nieve and tabla de nieve.)

To answer the question, the verb of choice seems to be either surfear (which is also used for surfing of the non-Internet kind) or hacer snowboard. Once in a while, a monstrosity such as snowboardear is used.
