Beckham may inspire students to learn Spanish

The fact that soccer superstar Dave Beckham is learning Spanish now that he has joined a Madrid team will encourage more British youngsters to study the language, the British schools minister says. "That is going to be a little easier now that David Beckham has gone to Spain and announced that he is going to learn Spanish," Stephen Twigg said at the Professional Association of Teachers annual conference. "He will be a very useful representative to young people about how it can be cool to learn Spanish." Although Spain in the top foreign tourist destination for Brits and Spanish is the continent's No. 2 business language (behind English), currently only about 8 percent of British youngsters learn Spanish.
