Bob Hope's first film: 'Going Spanish'
Monday July 28, 2003
Comedian Bob Hope, who died Sunday at the age of 100, had his film debut in a 19-minute comedy titled "Going Spanish." In the 1934 film, the Hope character (named Bob) and his fiancée find themselves in a Argentine town that is celebrating Don't Do It Day. The premise of the day is that it you must be forgiven if you sing a song after insulting someone. Of course, complications ensue when Bob takes full advantage of the rule. Although the action takes placed in Argentina, don't expect to hear much real Spanish if you can find this film, though: The name of the town where the story occurs is Los Pochos Eggos.
