Word of the Day: Vencer

By Gerald Erichsen, About.com

La palabra del día: vencer
Pronunciación aproximada: behn-sehr (The Spanish r here is pronounced with a tap of the tongue against the front of the palate.) Listen
Significado: to defeat, to beat, to overcome, to prevail, to fall due or be payable (as of a bill, debt or bond)
Ejemplo: Aunque todos tenemos debilidades, podemos vencerlas con la ayuda de Dios.
Traducción: Although all of us have weaknesses, we can overcome them with God's help.
Aviso: This verb is conjugated irregularly in terms of spelling but not in pronunciation. When the c of the stem comes before an o or a, it is changed to a z. For example, the first-person indicative present conjugation (meaning "I overcome") is venzo.
