Venir Conjugation in Spanish, Translation, and Examples

The Spanish verb venir means to come. It is a very frequently used verb. Like many other common Spanish verbs, venir is highly irregular. It is a stem-changing verb, which means that in some conjugations the vowel e from the verb's stem can change to ie or i when found in a stressed syllable. Also, a -d- or -g- is added to the ending of some conjugations.

The only other verbs that use the same conjugation pattern are those ending in -venir such as intervenir (often meaning to intervene or to take part) and prevenir (often meaning to prevent or to warn). However, the conjugation of venir has some similarities to the conjugations of the verb tener (to have).

Venir Present Indicative

In the present indicative tense, the first person singular conjugation of the verb venir is irregular, and other conjugations are stem-changing, which means that the e in the stem of the verb changes to ie when it is in a stressed syllable.

Yo	vengo	Yo vengo a visitar a mi abuela.	I come to visit my grandma.
Tú	vienes	Tú vienes a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	You come to the library frequently.
Usted/él/ella	viene	Ella viene a la escuela en autobús.	She comes to school by bus.
Nosotros	venimos	Nosotros venimos con nuestros amigos.	We come with our friends.
Vosotros	venís	Vosotros venís de la fiesta muy tarde.	You come from the party very late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	vienen	Ellos vienen a comer a mi casa.	They come to eat at my house.

Venir Preterite Indicative

In the preterite tense conjugations of venir, the stem has an i instead of an e.

Yo	vine	Yo vine a visitar a mi abuela.	I came to visit my grandma.
Tú	viniste	Tú viniste a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	You came to the library frequently.
Usted/él/ella	vino	Ella vino a la escuela en autobús.	She came to school by bus.
Nosotros	vinimos	Nosotros vinimos con nuestros amigos.	We came with our friends.
Vosotros	vinisteis	Vosotros vinisteis de la fiesta muy tarde.	You came from the party very late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	vinieron	Ellos vinieron a comer a mi casa.	They came to eat at my house.

Venir Imperfect Indicative

The imperfect tense conjugation of venir is regular. The imperfect can be translated as "was coming" or "used to come."

Yo	venía	Yo venía a visitar a mi abuela.	I used to come to visit my grandma.
Tú	venías	Tú venías a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	You used to come to the library frequently.
Usted/él/ella	venía	Ella venía a la escuela en autobús.	She used to come to school by bus.
Nosotros	veníamos	Nosotros veníamos con nuestros amigos.	We used to come with our friends.
Vosotros	veníais	Vosotros veníais de la fiesta muy tarde.	You used to come from the party very late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	venían	Ellos venían a comer a mi casa.	They used to come to eat at my house.

Venir Future Indicative

The future tense of the verb venir is irregular. Instead of simply using the infinitive venir as the stem, it includes a d, so the stem becomes vendr-.

Yo	vendré	Yo vendré a visitar a mi abuela.	I will come to visit my grandma.
Tú	vendrás	Tú vendrás a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	You will come to the library frequently.
Usted/él/ella	vendrá	Ella vendrá a la escuela en autobús.	She will come to school by bus.
Nosotros	vendremos	Nosotros vendremos con nuestros amigos.	We will come with our friends.
Vosotros	vendréis	Vosotros vendréis de la fiesta muy tarde.	You will come from the party very late.

Venir Periphrastic Future Indicative

The periphrastic future is formed with three components: the present indicative conjugation of the verb ir (to go), the preposition a, and the infinitive venir.

Yo	voy a venir	Yo voy a venir a visitar a mi abuela.	I am going to come to visit my grandma.
Tú	vas a venir	Tú vas a venir a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	You are going to come to the library frequently.
Usted/él/ella	va a venir	Ella va a venir a la escuela en autobús.	She is going to come to school by bus.
Nosotros	vamos a venir	Nosotros vamos a venir con nuestros amigos.	We are going to come with our friends.
Vosotros	vais a venir	Vosotros vais a venir de la fiesta muy tarde.	You are going to come from the party very late.
Ustedes/ellos/ellas	van a venir	Ellos van a venir a comer a mi casa.	They are going to come to eat at my house.

Venir Present Progressive/Gerund Form

The gerund or present participle for the verb venir has the stem change e to i, like the preterite conjugations of venir.

Ella está viniendo a la escuela en autobús.

She is coming to school by bus.

Venir Past Participle

The past participle is a verb form that can be used to form perfect tenses, such as the present perfect, which is formed with the auxiliary verb haber and the past participle venido.

Present Perfect of Venir

ha venido

Ella ha venido a la escuela en autobús.

She has come to school by bus.

Venir Conditional Indicative

The conditional tense of venir uses the same irregular stem as the future tense, including the d in vendr-. The conditional is usually translated to English as "would + verb."

Yo	vendría	Yo vendría a visitar a mi abuela si tuviera más tiempo.	I would come visit my grandma if I had more time.
Tú	vendrías	Tú vendrías a la biblioteca frecuentemente si te gustara leer.	You would come to the library frequently if you liked to read.
Usted/él/ella	vendría	Ella vendría a la escuela en autobús, pero le gusta caminar.	She would come to school by bus, but she likes to walk.
Nosotros	vendríamos	Nosotros vendríamos con nuestros amigos, pero están ocupados.	We would come with our friends, but they are busy.
Vosotros	vendríais	Vosotros vendríais de la fiesta muy tarde si tuvierais permiso.	You would come from the party very late if you had permission.

Venir Present Subjunctive

The present subjunctive is formed by starting with the first person present indicative conjugation. Since the yo conjugation for venir is irregular (vengo), then the present subjunctive conjugations are also irregular.

Que yo	venga	Mi madre quiere que yo venga a visitar a mi abuela.	My mother wants me to come visit my grandma.
Que tú	vengas	El profesor sugiere que tú vengas a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	The professor suggests that you come to the library frequently.
Que usted/él/ella	venga	Patricio espera que ella venga a la escuela en autobús.	Patricio hopes that she comes to school by bus.
Que nosotros	vengamos	Miranda pide que vengamos con nuestros amigos.	Miranda asks that we come with our friends.
Que vosotros	vengáis	Hortencia no quiere que vosotros vengáis muy tarde de la fiesta.	Hortencia does not want you to come late from the party.
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas	vengan	Mi familia espera que ustedes vengan a comer a mi casa.	My family hopes that you come to eat at my house.

Venir Imperfect Subjunctive

There are two options for conjugating the imperfect subjunctive:

Option 1

Que yo	viniera	Mi madre quería que yo viniera a visitar a mi abuela.	My mother wanted me to come visit my grandma.
Que tú	vinieras	El profesor sugirió que tú vinieras a la biblioteca frecuentemente.	The professor suggested that you come to the library frequently.
Que usted/él/ella	viniera	Patricio esperaba que ella viniera a la escuela en autobús.	Patricio hoped that she would come to school by bus.
Que nosotros	viniéramos	Miranda pidió que viniéramos con nuestros amigos.	Miranda asked that we come with our friends.
Que vosotros	vinierais	Hortencia no quería que vosotros vinierais muy tarde de la fiesta.	Hortencia did not want you to come late from the party.
Que ustedes/ellos/ellas	vinieran	Mi familia esperaba que ustedes vinieran a comer a mi casa.	My family hoped that you would come to eat at my house.

Option 2

Que yo	viniese	Mi madre quería que yo viniese a visitar a mi abuela.	My mother wanted me to come visit my grandma.

Venir Imperative

In order to give direct orders or commands you need the imperative mood. Most of the commands for venir are irregular. There are both positive and negative commands, shown in the tables below.
