Culture Unit One: Sí, señor. Yo hablo español.
Are you ready for a break from the study of grammar and vocabulary? If you, you may enjoy this week's lesson. The lesson, found in the textbook on pages 59 through 64, takes a brief look at Hispanic culture in the Americas. Probably for most of you taking this class, this is the Spanish-speaking culture with which you are most familiar, for Spanish has become the second most common language in the United States, and nearly all of it is spoken with a Latin American accent.
Rather than add to the lesson this week, I encourage you to look around About.com to see what you can find out about Hispanic culture in the Americas. For starters, follow the links on the Culture page. You'll find references to some Spanish-language articles there as well as a variety of other materials about Mexico, Central America and South America.
Also, be sure to do the exercises in the text. The answers to all the questions can be found scattered throughout the text.
We'll resume our study of grammar and vocabulary next week with a lesson
on counting as well as the days of the week and the months of the year.
