Animals Masculine or Feminine?

By April 15, 2013

Follow me on:

Male things have masculine gender, and female things have feminine gender, right? Not necessarily so, as explained in our lesson on grammatical and biological gender as it pertains to animals. A similar situation as it relates to gender of people was discussed a couple years ago in this blog.

Is hamster masculine or feminine and how do you say it?

(2) Spanish Guide says:

It’s masculine. Hámster (note the accent in the first syllable) is derived from the German Hamster and retains the beginning aspiration, so it is pronounced as if it were spelled jámster. The plural is hámsteres, although it is incorrectly sometimes spelled as hámsters because it common to pluralize some foreign words simply by adding s.
