In Spanish as well as English, it is common to use adjectives as nouns. For example, in the sentence "Los pobres viven en zonas rurales" or its English equivalent, "The poor live in rural areas," the subject of the sentence (pobres or "poor") is a word that typically is an adjective. This practice is much more common in Spanish, where just about any descriptive adjective can become a noun, as explained in our lesson on using adjectives as nouns.
