The verb pedir is usually translated as "to ask for," but if you're new to learning Spanish, you may find it easier if you think of it as meaning "to request." Our newest lesson, on using pedir, explains why.

Pedir is a handy word in restaurants: “Ya he pedido gracias” – I have already ordered thank you.

“Podrķa pedir por favor” – Could I order please
“Me gustarķa pedir por favor – I should like to order please.
