Donde and adónde are two of the Spanish words that can be used to mean "where" — and they aren't the only ones. As our new lesson on "where" explains, your choice of words will often depend on the structure of the sentence as well as whether "where" refers to a destination or mere location.

When asking the equivalent of “where abouts?” I’ve always used “por dónde . . . . ?” when looking for a place or location.

As a former Spanish teacher, I found it tough to explain the uses of where, until I remembered how English has changed. At one time English had three words which have combined into where:

whither: adónde ……… Whither goest thou?
where: dónde ……….. Where art thou?
whence: de dónde ……. Whence comest thou?

Use quotes from old poetry, Shakespeare, or the Bible to get these across. Worked for me.
