H Not the Only Silent Letter
Sunday October 26, 2008
There must be something special about words of Greek origin that causes exceptions to the rules of Spanish. Just as many of the Spanish masculine words ending in -a come from Greek, so do many of the words that start with a silent letter other than h. They're pretty easy to remember, though — we have adopted many of the same words in English.

Words of Greek and Latin in general retain the gender which they originally had when adopted into Spanish and other Romance languages. That’s why nouns ending in -a from Greek remained masculine in Spanish.
