Earn More Than a Good Grade
Tuesday August 26, 2008
One of the tempting things to do as a student is to think of a class as a mere academic exercise, or just a way to get a grade or another credit. If you do that when you're taking Spanish — or any other language — you're making a big mistake. You'll enjoy the class more and get more out of it if you think of language as a life skill that is both practical and fun.

I agree. I teach the basics the first week of school as well as how to behave in the classroom. Pretty much mirroring what the teachers are teaching the first week of school in the elementary classes. Then I move on to real skills like food and eating at the table and politely ordering food. The kids get a kick out of being served by their peers. I bring in real forks, cups, plates, etc just like they would have at there own tables. I even bring in plastic food so they can have food on the plate, which they need to ask for in Spanish.
