In the end, meaning matters

Friday June 15, 2007
Spanish is a language rich in suffixes. Take a simple word such as mundo (world), for example. With suffixes it can become mundanal (having to do with the human world), mundano (worldly), mundial (worldwide), mundialmente (worldwide), mundillo (can be used in translating the phrase "the world of") and mundología (world's wisdom), to list the common ones (meanings other than those given are also possible). Learning and using suffixes is a good way to expand your vocabulary, and you can get a start on that with this month's Word of the Month feature. Each word this month will be a word formed by use of a suffix. Learn today's word...
