Singular or plural?

Sometimes the similarities between English and Spanish can be deceiving. But then, as one of this site's readers recently did, you run across a simple sentence such as this one that just doesn't sound right, even if you know what all the words mean: Se quitaron el sombrero for "They took off their hats." I find your lessons helpful and interesting but I absolutely HATE the way the pages are formatted so that I have to click on a link to see the whole article.

It just seems like a cheap tactic to force me to see even more adverts and demeans yourself, the site and the New York Times.
