Hurucán Wilma: Se prolonga la pesadilla

Saturday October 22, 2005
"Se prolonga la pesadilla" reads the headline in this morning's El Universo, one of Mexico City's leading newspapers: "The nightmare continues." The online version of El Universo continues to provide the best online coverage of Hurricane Wilma, and it is painting in incredible picture of destruction along the Yucatán Peninsula. Here are a few examples of what the newspaper is reporting, along with English translations:
(Waves 16 to 26 feet high are being reported in Cancún and the Mayan Riviera.)
(In the last 24 hours the rain reported in Isla Mujeres is 64.5 inches.)
(Wilma's winds damaged everything in the storm's path: a Mexican Social Security Institute hospital, city hall and hundreds of houses.)
(The devastating power of the weather system could be compared to the strength of four hurricanes, one after the other.)
The hurricane, which has weakened to a still-desctructive Category 3, is expected to remain over the Yucatán today. As of this writing, the newspaper is reporting no deaths, although undoubtedly that will change. Go to El Universo...
