Early U.S. explorer was Spanish-speaking African

The first non-native person to visit what is now Arizona and New Mexico spoke Spanish. If you know much about the history of the U.S. Southwest, that's probably not surprising. But what might be is the fact that the explorer, Estévanico, was a slave and African, not European.
