Sandino wins best-actress nomination
Tuesday January 25, 2005
Catalina Sandino Moreno, the Colombian actress who made her film debut playing a teenage drug mule in María, eres llena de gracia, has received the Academy Award nomination for best actress for her role in that film. If she wins the award, she would be the first actress to receive an Academy Award for a Spanish-speaking role.
Sandino plays the lead role in the film, marketed in English-speaking countries as "Maria Full of Grace." She is considered an underdog for the award, although she has received accolades from movie critics since the film's premiere. Her nomination does, however, increase the chances that the film will be shown at more U.S. theaters, possibly even outside the art-film circuit, before the awards are presented next month.
The other Spanish-language film nominated for a major award was Mar adentro ("The Sea Within"), nominated for best foreign-language film. It is based on the true story of a man who sought legal approval for his own assisted suicide.
María has already been a modest commercial success in the United States, grossing $6.5 million, a large amount for a foreign-language film featuring unknown actors. It has yet to debut in much of the Spanish-speaking world.
Finally, a third Spanish-language film, Los diarios de motocicleta ("The Motorcycle Diaries"), a biographical film about a young Che Guevara, won two minors awards: best adapted screenplay, and best song (for Al otro lado del río). It was the commercially most successful Spanish-language film of 2004 in the United States.
