When it came to Sunday's Golden Globe awards, the news of the day in the United States is that "The Aviator" and "Sideways" earned top honors as the best dramatic and comedy/musical films of last year, respectively. But in most of the Spanish-language press today, a third film — Spain's Mar adentro ("The Sea Within" in its English-language release) — is garnering most of the attention.
Mar adentro, based on the true story of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic who unsuccessfully fought for the right for legal assisted suicide, won the award for best foreign-language film. The award is expected to improve the Alejandro Amenábar film's chance of being nominated for Academy Awards. The leading role is played by Javier Bardem, who is also considered to be an Oscar contender.
