Madrid promotes itself for 2012 Olympics

Tuesday January 11, 2005
Whether it will make much difference is anyone's guess, but promoters of having the 2012 Olympics in Madrid have put together a top-notch Web site — one that's a great tool for those learning Spanish. One of the nifty features of the site, at least for Spanish students, is that you can click on almost any Spanish-language page and instantly see its English translation (or French translation, for that matter). The site is well worth a visit if you're thinking about a trip to Madrid; although its main audience ostensibly is the International Olympic Committee. There's a wealth of information about the city's facilities, culture, history and more. Because the site is written in fairly formal Spanish, or at least Spanish devoid of colloquialisms, it should be easier than some for Spanish students to grasp.

Other cities still in the running for the 2012 games are Paris, New York, Moscow and London. One factor that may hurt Madrid's chances is that Spain last hosted the Olympics in 1992. Those games were in Barcelona, where Catalan is spoken along with Spanish.Visit the site...
