In the news: ETA leader arrested

Tuesday December 9, 2003
If you've been reading the headlines of Spanish-language media today, you've almost certainly come across news about the arrest in France of a man believed to be the military chief of the ETA. The ETA (the letters stand for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, meaning "Basque Fatherland and Freedom" in the Basque language) is a militant Basque pro-independence organization viewed by the Spanish government as a terrorist group responsible for more than 800 deaths during since 1968. A related Spanish word you're likely to come across is etarra, which refers to a supporter of ETA. The latest headlines on this event can be found by browsing through the Spanish news media in our list of Spanish news sources; for some historical background, check out this 2002 report from CNN.
