Guatemalans reject former strongman Montt

Preliminary results from Sunday's Guatemalan elections point to a runoff in December between conservative businessman Oscar Berger and leftist Alvaro Colom, with Berger picking up a strong plurality, although not quite enough to win the election outright and avoid the runoff. But today's election headlines are that Ríos Montt, a longtime politician widely blamed for atrocities against Mayans in the 1980s, placed a distant third and won't be on the December ballot.
