Cervantes festival under way in Guanajuato, Mexico

Tuesday October 21, 2003
It may be too late to travel to this year's Festival Internacional Cervantino, the International Cervantes Festival, in the north-central Mexican city of Guanajuato. But it isn't too early to start planning for next year's festival, considered to be one of the most outstanding cultural events in Latin America. Each year the event draws tens of thousands of Mexicans and tourists alike to attend plays, concerts, symposia, dance performances and films. Despite its name, the festival is dedicated to performing arts in general, not specifically those relating to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of Don Quijote.

This year's festival, which honors the arts of Germany, France and the Mexican state of Michoacán, began Oct. 15 and continues through Nov. 2. The event regularly draws performing artists from throughout the world. Among the performers this year are German opera singers, Egyptian ballet dancers and Japanese thespians. Mimes and other street performers from throughout Mexican also converge on Guanajuato.

Even without the festival, Guanajuato is a city worth visiting. It is a city rich in culture known for, among other things, its subterranean main street, its mummy museum and its historical architecture. Here is where you can find more information about the city and its festival:
