Traditionally masculine words being used for the feminine

Traditionally, a male lawyer in Spanish is un abogado and a female lawyer is una abogada. But it is becoming more common to see constructions as la abogado to refer to a female lawyer, la juez (instead of la jueza) to refer to a female judge, and even la doctor (instead of la doctora) to refer to a female doctor. (It's similar to the growing use in English of calling someone like Cameron Diaz an actor instead of an actress.) Pablo Ramos Mendez, a writer for a newspaper in Caracas, Venezuela, recently called such word usages repugnant and horrifying. Read more (in Spanish)... (Source: El Universal)
