End coming for Mexico's vochos

Thursday June 26, 2003
The Volkwagen Beetle soon will be no more in Mexico. Volkswagen announced a few days ago it will discontinue Mexican production of the pre-World War II model, which has become almost a symbol of Mexican transportation. Manufacture of the Bug was discontinued in Germany in 1978, and since 1996 Volkswagen's plant in Puebla, Mexico, had been the only one in the world producing the car, known as a vocho in Mexico. Beetles can be seen everywhere in Mexico; they're the leading model used for Mexico City taxis, and they serve even as police cars. If your Spanish is up to it, take a look at Vochoweb, an amusing and informative site that not-so-accurately bills itself as the official vocho site.
