FCC ponders Univision deal
Sunday June 22, 2003
Should Univision, the largest Spanish-language media company in the United States, acquire the Hispanic Broadcasting Corp., the biggest Spanish-language radio network? That's the question facing the Federal Communications Commission, which is being asked by the two companies to approve the $2.8 billion deal.
The proposal has spawned plenty of debate, according to this recent article in The Miami Herald. Supporters say the merger would put Spanish-language media on the same financial footing as their English-language cousins. Opponents cite antitrust concerns, worrying whether the move would overly concentrate Spanish-language media into a single corporation. The FCC is expected to rule in a few weeks.
